Kilfenora Cathedral and Crosses

West gable and tower of Kilfenora Cathedral. Many reviews dislike this view of the cathedral. The RSAI wrote in 1900: “The cathedral is, externally, an ugly building, with an uglier tower, suggestive of a heap of shapeless boxes”. They, in turn, quoted from the “Handbook to Lisdoonvarna” by Philip Dwyer published in 1876 which reads: “The attempt at a tower is conspicuously mean and hideous. A pile of emigrants' luggage, with a rabbit-hutch or bird-cage overhead, would look equally imposing.” See p. 395 in: “Proceedings”. 1900. “Proceedings”.
