St. Patrick's Catholic Church was built in 1868 as part of the Irish Settlement in Madison County which started in the 1850s. The parish covered much territory, about the same as the entire Diocese of Des Moines today. St. Patrick's was honored in 1979 by a visit from Pope John Paul II.
